Today is beginning of the new lunar year. It is the year of the rat. We celebrate the new year with dinner together with the family and friends, give hung bao to the kids, and wear clean red clothing.
As we were discussing the traditions of Chinese new year, I found out more things to observe:
- Debts have to be paid.
- No borrowing.
- No cussing.
- No stories about death and ghosts.
- No reflection of the past.
- No crying.
- Do not wash hair.
- Do not clean the house.
I suppose for one day, I could do all of the above, except paying off my mortgage and car loan.
The Chinese always have elaborate ways of doing things, especially during the new year.
So for those who are celebrating the new year today: Gong Xi Fa Chai! Xin nian kuai le!

新年快乐!
We had 饺子 (jiaozi, raviolis)!
I love Chinese traditions, I remember reading about the origin of the “no cutting hair” one in high school!
