Lunch bits - edition 1

I went to Islands today for lunch with co-workers. It was a rainy day when we talked about:

HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray: who’s winning? Most tend to think it’s a “tie”. Since we work for Toshiba, we obviously support HD-DVD, but the format war is still far from over. Matt is the latest person to take the plunge with a Toshiba HD-A30 1080p HD DVD Player.
TiVO: Get more units. Hack more hard drive space. Cable companies will no longer carry local HD channels using QAM cards - now require a digital cable box.
Movies: women generally don’t like horror movies. Gory movies are just no fun. Can you really fall asleep on action movies? We agree that Pitch Black is a better movie than the latest Chronicles of Riddick (both on HD).
Corvette Driving School - it’s my dream to try one of these. Thanks Jason for the info.
Briefly talked about vacation in Hawaii. (Yeah, I’ve never been to Hawaii)

Small correction.

Not all HD channels from Cox are using switched digital video–only the newer ones from what I hear. New switched digital channels from can’t be picked up by CableCard which is how you can get encrypted channels from Cox without a cable box. HD Tivo uses CableCard, but now it looks like you won’t get all the HD channels.

On the other hand, QAM tuners are for the free unencrypted HD channels carried over coax. HD Tivo works with it, but you don’t currently get guide info with Tivo service for QAM channels.

Clear as mud? And you wonder why more people don’t get into HD.

All I can say is the FCC, the Feds, or the Senate, just hurry up and make HD OTA mandatory. I shouldn’t have to rely on Cable or Satellite to get my HD programming.
