The Best Golf of My Life, so Far

August 30th, 2007 · No Comment

MeBack from a 2 week holiday in Indonesia, I managed to fit in 2 rounds of golf (thanks Dad!) in Bali.  I was so stoked and enjoyed every part of it.  I told myself I will not take my game too seriously and just go out there and play - that worked wonderfully.  Well, it also helped that I was playing with my family, a rare occasion, and played in Bali’s picturesque golf courses: Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club and Bali Golf and Country Club Nusa Dua

The most memorable was the Bedugul (Bali Handara Kosaido) golf course because I played the best round of my life (shot 105) and felt good in making mostly 2 putts, thanks to the knowledgable local caddy.  I still have yet to be more consistent with my 200+ yards shots, but making good putts are easy to enough to learn that it can essentially improve my game. Well anyway, let me recall what I did.  We started at the 15th tee:

  • Essentially with no warm up, we just went up the 15th tee and hit it.  Worth noting that I usually don’t use a driver on the golf course, but the clubs I borrowed from my cousin was a Callaway X460, so I had to give it a go.  Well, it didn’t go where I wanted it go, but it’s ok — we were warming up.  I did hit a great approach shot to the green using a pitching wedge.
  • The 16th was one of the most difficult, but I managed to bogey that hole thanks to an ok drive to the left and two good approach shots using a X-wood and sand wedge.  I ended up two putting, with the good read from my caddy.  The view was great.
  • I par’ed the Par-3 175 yards 2nd hole by hitting an awesome PW chip shot to 1′ from the hole.  It was 2nd easiest hole, but it was a great feeling.
  • The bogey save on the 8th Par-4 374 yards was highlighted by the PW pitch shot from 80 yards to about 3′ from the hole.  The greens were so soft, I was actually able to make the ball stop and spin it back a little.

Now on the golf course near Nusa Dua beach, I didn’t do as well as the one in Bedugul, but there was a memorable shot on the 16th, where I drove a straight one about 200 yards with the driver.  It helped that the fairway was wide and wind was from my back.  Another notable was on the 15th green where I almost par’ed it because my putt off the fringe stopped on the edge of the hole.  I would love it to roll in, but I was just happy to hit it close.  Overall, the expensive green fee here enabled us to play on a well manicured and beautiful golf course near the beach.
