The Sun is rising again

Sun acquired MySQLWith the acquisition of MySQL by Sun Microsystems, it looks like Sun is poised to take over the Web Application business that has long been dominated by IBM and Oracle. Indeed, Sun will be the one stop shop for companies who wants to setup an Enterprise level web application, starting from their own Sparc hardware, Solaris Operating System, Sun’s Web Server (formerly Netscape’s Web Server), Glass Fish web container, and now the MySQL database. My experience with Sun’s products have been positive, starting with the OS and Web Server. Glass Fish has been getting rave reviews among the Java developer community. Some even put it above JBOSS and Weblogic. As for MySQL, the rest of us can attest to its reliability when we trust it to run our blogs. If I have a company running a Sun platform infrastructure, this will make a nice package deal.

It was also no coincidence Oracle announced to acquire BEA on the same day Sun made their announcement. The battle for middleware supremacy is on, and I’m betting on Sun to pull this off quite nicely.

Thanks to Reodica for the lead to the Sun/MySQL press release.
