Something about these major championships that always brings me back to them, year after year. Nowadays it’s about watching the great ones actually squirm - struggling just keep par. This year golf’s US Open at Oakmont was less dramatic than 2006’s “meltdown” stories of Phil, Jim, and Colin. But it was still fun to watch the Pros use a putter from 60 yards off the green because they were afraid of slippery and crazy slopes beyond the hole. Let’s not forget about the thick rough — seen a few players beat the ground in anger after a really poor shot out of the tall grass. It was fun watching all of that emotion - made the game more interesting. It was nail biting to watch Tiger’s final round, final hole, 15+ foot putt for a birdie that could’ve forced a play-off.
A lot of people were putting their hopes on Tiger Woods to beat Angel Cabrera, or at least force a play-off. There is no doubt that Tiger is the #1 player in the world, but expecting him to beat everyone all the time is too much to ask for. I had my bets on Zach Johnson, coming off from a difficult Master’s golf course, who should’ve gained enough experience to at least be in the Top 10 of the US Open. The US Team (90 players) couldn’t beat the team (two guys) from Argentina. The odds should’ve been good for USA, but it was anyone’s guess which of the (long shot) player would win it this year. Well, it was the “open” championship, where anyone, from any country, could win it.
